ICELANDIC MEMORIAL SOCIET OF NOVA SCOTIA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING APRIL 14, 2019 MUSQUODOBIT VALLEY BICENTENNIAL THEATRE
l. Attendance: 23 people.
2. WELCOME: Glenda Burrows welcomed the guests and introduced Edith Pahlke (from Ottawa now Halifax), Larry Harrison MLA and Robert and Janice Mellish, honorary consul.
3. MINUTES OF APRIL 29, 2018. Moved by Marshall Burgess and seconded by Ken Burrows. Approved.
4. REPORT OF CHAIR: Glenda Burrows.
A) Last year the Society celebrated its 20th anniversary.
B) The Snorri West group visited Markland in August 2018.
C) Website. Being developed.
D) Newletters. Published and distributed in November.
E) Borga Jakobson. Turned 93 this past year. She sent 15 pages on new notes on Markland. The society was given permission to use this information on its website.
F) Members who passed away. Rex Tasker, Dianne Englund and Dr. Charles Hayes.
G) Guest Book. Olafur Egilsson from Pictou agreed to translate the Icelandic comments in the guest book.
5.TREASURERS REPORT: Bonnie Price.
Opening balance January 1, 2018 was $2,951.26. Closing balance on December 31, 2018 was $1,709.33. Moved by Bonnie Price and seconded by Beveley Redden. Approved.
6. MEMBERSHIP REPORT: Bonnie Price.
18 life members. 15 singles. 21 families. 2 honorary members.
7. NEW BUSINESS:
A) Moose River Road. Not listed . Graded. Harley Redden reported that Atlantic Gold did some drilling on the old Icelandic Road. The Society was asked to sign off. As a donation they did some grading on the road.
B) CAIRN. Keith Ellsworth again contacted. Cracks in the cement.
C) Trails Day. June 1. Meet at cairn at 10 am.
D) BOOKS. The Society had its books on display. Bev Redden brought in copies of a new book written by her father Murray Prest and Henry Decker on sawmills in the Musquodobit Valley.
E) LOG CABIN: Ken Burrows reported that a second application of a preservative will be applied. Discussion on replacing the apple tree next to the cabin.

F). MEAGHERS GRANT DAY. June 8 . Space available for displays.
G) INL CALENDARS. $10 plus $3 shipping. One will be published in 2020.
H) GUESTS: Marshall Burgess gave a report on the Snorri West guests who came to Markland in
August 2018. Icelandair has ceased flying into Halifax so this may end this program coming to
th Markland. Oliver and Donna Nelson will visit Markland on May 18 .
8. ROBERT MELLISH. Congratulated the Society on its work. An world consular conference will soon be held in Reykjavik. He hopes the ambassador to Canada will soon visit Nova Scotia.
9. LARRY HARRISON, MLA. Thanked the Society for the invitationto attend. Will looked into gravelling the Caribou Road to the cairn.
10. NEW EXECUTIVE: Moved that the 2018 executive be reappointed for 2019. Approved.
11. JOHN G. HIGGINS: Guest speaker. His relative built the log cabins for the Icelanders in the 1870s. He gave a history of the various generations of the Higgins family.

12. LUNCH: Kathy Didkowsky made the pancakes. Her sisters made the delicious grape salad. J.
